CALCULATE CALORIES

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.

    1. Start at the Black Cock.

    2. From the carpark, turn left onto Heol Pen y Bryn Road heading up hill and passing the Mountian Ranch on your right.

    3. After 0.4 mile, whilst running down hill, take the first right hand turn in the road heading towards the Forest Fawr car park.

    4. Pass entrance to the carpark on your right. Take first left hand track into the forest up short incline. Stick to main path for 0.5 mile.

    5. Main path bears left gently uphill, but take sharp right, then right again to zig zag back down hill through the woods.

    6. At the bottom of a sharp downhill, follow path to zig zag back on a sharp left hand trun and continue for 0.5 mile to a small bridge crossing the stream just at the road.

    7. Cross the road, through the gate heading towards the Forest Tea Room (marked X on the map) heading gentle uphill.

    8. From the road stay on path straight ahead for 0.2 mile until a short steep incline to join a wider forest path at a cross roads.

    9. Turn right on the main path which will head uphill and bear left as you pass the entrance to the Blue Water Iron Mine. Stay on this path for 0.3 mile until you reach a second cross roads.

    10. Turn left onto forest road for 2 miles, heading down hill and then onto a disused railway track passing under one stone bridge half way along a straight section, then short down hill until you reach a second stone bridge (marked X on the map).

    11. Take the foot path on the right directly before the bridge, taking you onto a sigle track and heading uphill onto Craig yr Allt. Stick to the ridge path to run across the mountain.

    12. After coming off the hill you will reach a gate just where the path meets the road to Rockwood Stables.

    13. Bear left to take the road down hill.

    14. At the junction, turn left downhill for 0.2 mile

    15. Turn right down hill, then uphill for 0.2 mile, the take foot path on right. This footpath is often very muddy! It contours around Twyn Garwa.

    16. Take the left hand path uphill after 0.3 miles and follow path on to the A469 road.

    17. Cross the road heading NE (ish) and take the footpath up hill onto Caerphilly Common up to the trig point. From here it's down hill back to the pub!

    18. Retrace steps to get back to the road. Cross the main road to take the minor road, directly opposite the path, to head steep down hill 0.5 mile to the pub.
