MG - Fav Winter Jamoley’s Anti-CW, Via Chester
This one is an amended winter version of my favourite westerly route, specifically aimed at Southerly wind direction & a few small hills, but nothing severe, except short one up Griffin hill Gresford hence, it is anti-clockwise via Chester river front. It’s almost all headwind from the Jamoley’s to home, but predominantly down hill to be fair, until Rossette. And the last 5 miles from Wetreins lane is tailwind.
The route has been amended numerous times, so it now avoids all the dodgey lanes that can flood and get really mucky, especially my usual lanes south from Jamoley’s ( Lower mountain lane and Shordent lane are pot holed and awful in winter, not so great in summer to be fair) hence, the route has to swing west a little and use the A road in to Hope.
Note the best lanes through this area are from Kinerton ( The Green and Springers lane, right through to Burton, using Burton Hall lane and not the parallel lane, as it floods. My usual summer lanes, as they are fab.
The longer 51 mile version via the Greenway is aimed at NW winds, as Greenway provides 4 miles of protection from the NW wind and gets us further West to then take advantage of a tailwind almost all the way home, but makes for tough start up to Chester.
This specific route is not flat route, the main hilly bit is from Kinerton to the top of the ridge, at the A55 ( where we cross over on the footbridge, which is the top of The Warren) It’s a long slog upward hall,
There is an option to shorten that lengthy hall up, by taking Barracks lane, left , which shortens the route to the cafe by 1.5 miles. However, as this is my winter version, it is not advisable, as Barrack lane can be iffy and is exposed.
The only issue with this route is the an awkward big roundabout, after Handbridge, via the traffic lights and pathways ( need to remember that it is after the 2nd exit & before 3rd, there is a pathway that leads out of Westminster park. Use the traffic light crossings, going anticlockwise. It also means we avoid the main Chester Breton Aroad and is the best option.
I have a longer version with Greenway to the end and 51 miles, intended as summer route., but you can of course do half the Greeway and come off at Blacan for Saltney ferry crossing.
That said you can carry on from Chester river front to the race course and follow the Dee tow path, to Saltney ferry crossing, but tough in any sort of cross headwind, definately favours a SE wind, but not in strong Westerly North wind of course as it is totally exposed on both sides hence the Greenway is the option to avoid those headwind, as it allows you to ride as far as Queens ferry bridge. That would mean you drop straight into Hawarden and a longer route of course.
The summer version of this is a bit longer as it can be via Greenway and then that allows various options to then go via Hawarden as well or just Saltney ferry crossing and uses the lanes around Kinerton, through to Lav/ Rossette. There are many great lanes around there. However, all versions still use Terrace lane from the Jamoley’s, which is a few hundred mtrs up the hill towards Steve’s house on the right. This is because the only other route from the cafe, left takes you onto A fast A road. This route means only having to use a very short strech of it to pick up the B road into Gresford
