The route we are taking is approximately 7 ½ miles or approximately 12km. A soldier would be expected to complete this walk in less than 2 hours with a minimum of 35lbs on their backs, fortunately our Volunteers Army days have long since passed. The walk is expected to take between 4-5 hours, with 3 stops inbetween. Depending on how some of you are feeling on the day you can do an extended route for the Elite among us making it closer to 10.5 miles.

Starting and Finish at Trows and begin our walk away from Windy Gyle. Before we set off we will put the kids into smaller groups and each group will have one or more adults within it at all times. At our various planned stops the kids will learn about navigation skills, how to use a map and a compass, also they will be learn about the surrounding areas ecelogy and history. The kids will be encouraged to take an adequate rest when we stop, enough time for a drink of water and a snack.

    • 1st stop will be near the summit of Swineside Law at 457 meters – described as a “long but easy accent”.

    • 2nd stop will be on the England/Scotland border just North of of Black Braes.

    • 3rd stop Russels Cairn, Windy Gyle is one of the best known hills in the Cheviots and the fence along its summit ridge marks the border between England and Scotland.

    • Back to Trows to finish and make our way back home.

For those of you have have not had the pleasure of venturing to Windy Gyle before or its surrounding landscape the route is very well established. It is a national trust route so is clearly sign posted. The weather can change in an instant the 10 day weather forecast is set to be mild that day with a temparater of 16°C anf an 18km wind so please ensure you child is dressed appropriamely. It is said to rain the day before so part of the walk may be wet and muddy so suitable and sensible footwear is recommended. Please ensure your child has a back pack containing food to snack on like fruit, sandwiches, snack bars that type of thing and of course water.

    CALCULATE CALORIES

    About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
