Austria - Karwendel Höhenweg

A five-day hike in the Karwendel mountain range in Austria. We stayed in huts in the mountains, had to climb rock with our feet and hands and had to traverse challenging mountain trails and paths. Five main sections.

Day 1 (17-07-23):
Scharnitz (09:40) - Karstenalm (12:50)
Karstenalm (13:40) - Hallerangerhut (15:20)
Around 5 hours of walking with a lunch break at Karstenalm. Great weather for hiking and mostly gravel road and paths.

Day 2 (18-07-23):
Hallerangerhut (08:15) - Bettelwurf Hut (14:30)
Around 6 hours of walking with a climb to Speckkarspitze in between. Mostly mountain trails and challenging climb near Speckkarspitze. Weather was great, lots of sunshine but a thunderstorm arrived when we just finished our lunch at our destination.

Day 3 (19-07-23):
Bettelwurf Hut (08:45) - Pfeishütte (12:45)
4 hours of walking with a steep slope towards the Stempeljoch. Mostly mountain trails, but a very challenging scree ascent called the Wilde Bandesteig near the Stempeljoch. Weather started poorly with mist and rain, but cleared in the afternoon.

Day 4 (20-07-23):
Pfeishütte (07:30) - Seegrubbe (09:30)
Seegrubbe (10:30) - Solsteinhaus (15:30)
7 hours of walking with very challenging mountain trails and a terrifying descend down a scree slope with loose rocks. The path mellowed down after that, but still many ascents and descents making this track the most difficult. Weather started okayish with some mist and cloud cover in the morning, clearing up around noon.

Day 5 (21-07-23):
Solsteinhaus (07:40) - Hochzirl (09:30)
2 hour stroll down the mountain towards the nearest rain station (we changed our plans due to the weather). Weather forecast indicated thunderstorms. Path was mostly gravel roads down towards Hochzirl.
