Fontmell And Compton Down

Starting from Compton Abbas. A beautiful circular walk onto Fontmell and Compton Down with far reaching views across the Blackmore Vale.

Directions-

Come out of the drive and head right, then left down the woody lane. When you reach the bottom, turn right. You will then get to a sign saying 'Gore Glump' follow this footpath to the left which is called Watery Lane. Follow the path and this will take you onto Fontmell Down. Go diagonally left up towards the start of the Down through the 5 bar gate when you reach the open sloping up field.

At the carpark, if you are feeling thirsty or peckish, hang a right to the footpath alongside the main road, then cross over at the junction to head to the Airfield (but check opening times first!) If not, at the car park continue along the narrow footpath adjacent to the main road straight ahead. Follow it through the gate along Compton Down. Descent the hill and hang a left at the bottom of the saddle through the gate, this path will take you back into the village. Or if your feeling energetic, head up the saddle towards Melbury Beacon, a steep climb but well worth it for the views. Once you have followed the track at the bottom of the hill it will bring you back into the village. Turn left on the lane and you will soon spot the striking 15th century church round the corner. Continue through the village past the church on your right and follow the lane which will bring you back.

There are of course many variations and other paths you can choose to take if you wish to explore further, the routes are endless! But please be sure to stick to the footpaths, pick up your dog poo, be aware of livestock and close any gates that you open. Leave nothing but a footprint.
