Fontmell Down Circular Walk

Starting from Compton Abbas. A beautiful circular walk onto Fontmell Down with far reaching views across the Blackmore Vale. Far reaching views.

Directions-

Come out of the drive and head left down the lane through the village. When you hit the striking 15th century church, fork down the lane at the triangle 'not suitable for motor vehicles' and make your way up 'Capstitch' (the clue is in the name!) Once you have climbed to the top you will be welcomed with breathtaking views that will be very worth the climb.

At the carpark, if you are feeling thirsty or peckish, hang a right to the footpath alongside the main road, then cross over at the junction to head to the Airfield (but check opening times first!) If not, at the car park take the little gate to your right heading onto 'Fontmell Down'. Follow the path along the top, then descent down the hill. Go through the 5 bar gate at the bottom of the hill and head to the next gate at the bottom left hand corner of the field. Continue on the footpath, go through the little gate into the woods, this will take you to 'Watery Lane'. Follow the path until you reach the lane, turn right, then left up the lane were it will bring you back.

There are of course many variations and other paths you can choose to take if you wish to explore further, the routes are endless! But please be sure to stick to the footpaths, pick up your dog poo, be aware of livestock and close any gates that you open. Leave nothing but a footprint.
