Popular Routes
Ok, thanks for the info.
I think I remember now what I meant with the dummy course points from Garmin.
I really love the plotaroute feature 'Shift back by X m' that I use to get the course points at the correct time due to my laggy Garmin watch (fenix 5x, 6x and now epix).
When this feature was used, I got both my correct points from plotaroute and often, not always, an extra that Garmin inserted. And of course no symbols. Really basic Garmin feature...
But I understand that there could be useful usecases if turn directions from plotaroute not are the the main focus.
Unfortunately Garmin's API still doesn't support course point types for turns like Left and Right, so we can't send these via the Garmin Sync feature.
What you enter in PAR in the 'label' field is transferred to the Garmin connect course point label. The PAR 'description' field is ignored.
I did a test with a turn symbol but it was converted to a generic course point. Not a problem for me as I let my Garmin Edge do the navigation.
I have not seen any dummy course points in the 4 routes that I synced so far.
The only minor issue is that after syncing the route shows up in Garmin Connect with a total ascent of 0 metres, but I assume that is a Garmin bug.
I've not used the auto sync feature since a couple of tests when it was released.
Are also turn course point types and course point labels supported nowadays? And no extra dummy course points from Garmin?
Fantastic!
Thanks a lot for the quick update, really appreciate it.
We've updated the list of Course Point Types supported by the Garmin Sync feature. The following Point Types are now supported. All other symbols will translate to a GENERIC Point Type.
Thanks for looking into it!
I came to plotaroute because the Garmin route planner screws up your route when you insert multiple course points. And the Plotaroute sync to Garmin works nicely so it would be great to use that instead of manually uploading to my Edge device.
Peter is correct, the Garmin Sync API supports a more limited set of course point types than a file transfer, however it does look like it now supports a few more than we're using, so we'll look into updating the list that we use.
Sorry, but I think the problem lies in the automatic sync you are using. Garmins implementation of this is really basic, at least it was from the beginning.
I'm an Android mobile user and use Gexporter/Gimporter CIQ for wirelessly sync my routes to my watch without problem.
If that is not possible for you to try, you can always try to export a route as fit file and copy that file via cable to your watch (garmin/newfiles folder).
Hi Peter,
When I add for example a 'checkpoint' symbol to a route, then save the route and wait for the sync to Garmin connect, the course point in Garmin connect has a generic icon. From the symbols that I have tried so far only food, first_aid and danger symbols are correctly converted to Garmin.
See also this thread.
Thanks for sharing that Peter.
I share my symbol sheet that can be used when you plan a route and want your Garmin device to show specific symbols in up ahead feature or in the map field.
