    haha, quite right Mark!

I'll start by mapping as a cyclist, sounds easier. =p
It's been a while since I actually used my bike, but I'm sure mapping and reading about cycling here will motivate me to get back to it.

    Informative post, Julien, thanks.

I see you need to start cycling (or mapping as a cyclist) as I know a lot of cyclists use PR!! :)

    Hi Paul,

Interesting ... I just tried several routes in my town and the result is similar.
Even though on the OSM wiki, it lists "sett" and in my example "paving_stones" as "paved", if you check "avoid unpaved" on the route planner, it seems to refuse to go on roads that have "paving_stones" as surface type. So the conclusion seems to be that the list of surfaces considered as "paved" and "unpaved" aren't the same for OSM and for our route planner.

I'll give this information to the dev team, to see if this is something they want to change in the future or if this is done in the interest of most cyclists, regardless of their bike type. Not much of a cyclist myself, so I'll admit I wouldn't know.

Thanks for the additional information Paul!

    Have a nice day,

    Julien

Indeed, if I uncheck "Avoid Unpaved", Plotaroute will route the direct way by bike. The surface type for these roads is "sett". Personally, I would consider sett to be paved.

    Hi Paul,

The dev team says that the access should have been enough.
Maybe there's an answer on the OSM forums or help.

Feel free to share other situations like those if you encounter more.

    Regards,

    Julien

    Hi Paul,

Sorry it took some time to get back to you, which also means that I don't have access to your link anymore.
But thanks to the street names, I have tried ploting a route to see if the problem still remains and it doesn't appear to be the case.

I've looked at every street on OSM and the editing history, to see if one used to deny the access to bicycles and now does. But from what I could see, all the streets on this route already allowed access to bicycles when you tried to plot the route.
I've seen edits from two months ago, maybe by you, so they might have done the trick, even if I don't know why.

I'll ask the devs if there is something else of note beyond what John wrote in this guide.

I'll get back to you and if you still encounter this issue (on this route or others where the access should already allow for ploting), please share those routes as well and I'll look into it.

    Regards,

    Julien

I forgot to mention that for all 3 of these features (streets) in OSM, Allowed Access for Bicycles is set to Yes.

Please provide detail on the OSM map attributes required to route BY BIKE (and ON FOOT please). I've been challenged with this many times and previously just turned routing off to get past a known issue, but the fix is unknown. Currently, I'm planning to contribute OSM and I want to be efficient and effective with my editing. Here's a sample challenge in Feltre, Italy. I can plote a route BY CAR along Largo Panfilo Castaldi, Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Via Giuseppe Garibaldi properly and the distance is 135m. I try to do the same thing by bike, and the start and finish points are plotted elsewhere and the distance is 3.356km!
