Popular Routes
Ref. https://www.plotaroute.com/tip/22/how-to-add-labels-and-symbols-to-a-route-map I understand the concept of “waypoints” on plotaroute is somewhat confusing. However, I can add a point (let's use that word for a location or POI) as shown in the tip above (ADD LABELS AND SYMBOLS AT POINTS ON THE ROUTE). I save the route to PR, and then open it again, and everything looks the same, ie turn arrow, symbol
I then save it as a GPX with Directions, and re-upload it to PR, and the point is there but the turn arrow and symbol have changed to what may well be default ones.
I then save it as a FIT with Directions, and re-upload it to PR, and the point is not there. However, we have discussed this before, and the point is visible when I inspect it using FIT File Viewer.
A little bit confusing. Am I expecting too much when saving as a GPX? When I open it using my PC application, it shows as a point with the name I assigned, so that seems OK. Also, the final device is a Garmin, which really is not set up to manage fancy symbols etc.
If the Labels & Symbols is really intended (in its full glory) for use within PR, and is limited or reduced when exported, maybe the Tip could be updated to clarify that, please? I guess it would avoid some confusion further down the line.
Regards,
Mark
Hi Mark - our labels and symbols are a custom feature of plotaroute, so its not really possible include all the data needed to recreate them in GPX files, as the GPX format doesn't support this. We'll add something to the How-To Guide to explain this.
Understood. The issue is not about expecting (hoping) that GPS/FIT would support, but the fact that a lot of work can be lost if the process is not clear.
For instance, I created a route with (just) 10 points, adding text, symbols etc. My normal workflow is to download the route to my local folder, relevant for that route (ie, not to save in within PR). I then had to modify the route before taking a screen grab to share with friends. Of course, the uploaded file had lost much of the custom PR data.
Even though I am experienced with PR, I still hadn't twigged to this, so I guess I'm saying that what's really important is to highlight this; that the custom PR features are only fully maintained within the PR system.
Live & learn!
ps, and so my workflow has changed, masters are within PR until finalised!
