Hi Mark,
It's possible the app may not install with older versions of Android (we've tested it with Android 10), as they have less support for Progressive Web Apps (PWA), which is the type of app we have. However, try the folllowing to see if this helps:
If it installs correctly you should see the plotaroute icon on your home screen (without a Chrome icon in the corner) and the app will run full-screen (without a browser address bar). You'll also be able to see the app listed under Apps and Notifications under your Android Settings. We've noticed that there is sometimes a short delay in the the icon appearing on the home screen on Android devices, so you may need to wait a short while at the point where it saying it is adding the app. We'll look at adding some more pictures to to the installation instructions as you suggested.
My Samsung S7/Android 8 was indeed on a solid Wi-Fi, with account activated and latest Chrome (although on mobiles updates are bpushed, rather than pulled).
However, I will shortly be changing to a OnePlus 8T/Oxygen 11, so I'll see what happens then and report back. :)
Mark
I run it on my Samsung S7, Android 8.0.0, as Chrome as my browser w/o any problem.
Just to feed back .... I tried agin, today, on a poor mobile signal .... worked! So I now have the mobile app on my S7 (and I still haven't changed to my "new" mobile .... )
Do you have any suggestions for installing on Android 11 (R)? I'm trying to install the app on new Samsung A7 lite.
When I follow the proccedue, it looks like a bookmark gets installed on thehome page, but nothing else.
What happens when you click on the icon on your home page Jim? If it opens full-screen without the website address bar it has installed correctly.
It opens the website within Chrome, with the website address. The icon on the home page also has the Chrome circle in the bottom right corner.
OK, yes, it hasn't installed then. If it installs you won't see the Chrome icon in the corner of the plotaroute icon. The main reason this happens is if you weren't signed out and on the main home page when installing. Can you try again?
I logged out, cleared the browser data, the refreshed the main page. I removed the link on the main page. I did the menu item - add to home page, but it resulted in the same thing happen in. What else should try?
That should have been that I removed the link on the home page.
Not sure what else to suggest Jim. Do you see the Install button shown in step 3 in the instructions?
On an Android device you should be able to click this Install button to install the app rather than selecting Add to Home Screen from the Chrome menu.
No the button doesn't show up. I'm aware that Android 11 handles unknown app installation differently than previous versions. Could it be android security issue?
Can you check the Install Unknown Apps setting for Chrome under your Android Settings? This should be under Apps and Notifications, Advanced, Special App Access - Chrome needs to be set to Allowed.
It set to allow unknown apps from Chrome. Any other suggestions?
I'm not sure what else to suggest Jim, we'll need to investigate further. Just to be 100% sure that you're on the right page, can you check the website address of the page you're on when you try to install - it should be https://www.plotaroute.com/mobile/
It worked! the URL had been https://www.plotaroute.com/, not https://www.plotaroute.com/mobile/
Thank you.
As of today, its impossible to edit my routes on the mobile app. All the buttons for detour, shorten route, replot section, etc. have disappeared.
All was working fine up to yesterday and I'm a very regular user. . I'm on an Android Huawei phone.
Strange. Working fine here now. Samsung S9, chrome.
Jim - that's great news. We'll add some extra info to our instructions to make that clearer.
Andrew - are you maybe looking at the new Map and Compass screen instead of the route planner? You'll need to click Plot a Route from here or select a route to edit from your My Routes page. If that's not it, can you share a screnshot (you can email it to us via our Contact Us page if you don't have any way of sharing photo links)?
