Hi Kristen - you can also now use the Snap Route to Map tool (available in the toolbar in the route planner) - this will attempt to align the route with the map and add directions.  See the following How-To Guide for more information: How To Generate Turn By Turn Directions For Imported Routes

Just save it with the same name. You'll find 2 routes with the same name in My Routes, delete the older one. :)

Hi, I used the Trace a Route feature to replot and add the directions that were missing but, plotaroute will duplicate the route as a new one. Can I avoid it?

The quickest way to regenerate directions for a route (or to replace missing directions) is to use the Trace a Route feature to replot the route by tracing over it.

I am going through a lot of existing routes (that I drew up) fixing and adjusting the automatically generated directions. Every route has a lot of Directions that are wrong or just missing.

I find that if I go through a replot the route section by section, most Directions are auto added correctly. Not all, but most. 

Is there a function whereby I can just recompute all the Directions? Not do a replot - the route is correct. The problem is the Directions are not.
