Hi Anne, 

It depends which page you are using when viewing the elevation profile as it is available in several places.  If you are on the View Route page, click on the miles/km switch below the map to switch between imperial and metric.  If you are looking at the Route Profile page, there is a switch just above the route profile chart.  If you are editing the route in the route planner, you can change your units settings by clicking on the gear symbol in the top right corner.
