Crete: Kalathénes & Keramariano Gorge

This is a short walk, but with a stiff climb at the outset. We climbed out of the Kalathénes, heading south then east. Eventually reaching a road, we doubled back on an adjacent path heading towards Milia.

With the hard yards behind us, this was easy walking through olive groves edged with wild flowers. Once over the col and into the next valley we follow the contours of the valley before dropping down into Keramariano gorge. This is farmland with olives, sheep and goats, and several clusters of beehives. There is a chapel dedicated to Saint George (Agios Georgios) too.

It's a slow descent back to the road and back to our starting point.

We parked on the road.

It was very warm in late May. I might not wish to do this in July unless I started early.

Crete can be hot. Take plenty of water and snacks.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
