This walk is richly endowed in history from prehistoric to modern. Starting from a car park in Hepburn Wood. Old Bewick camp is thought to be Iron Age hillfort with two enclosures possibly developed by the Romans. Beautifully clear cup-and-ring markings of the Neolithic/Bronze Age adorn several rocks in an area festooned with Bronze Age burial cairns and well preserved WWII pillboxes. Bewick Hill Moor camp is thought to be the site of another Iron Age hillfort. The route finishes at medieval Hepburn Bastle which is actually a tower house recorded as such sometime before 1542 deep in the troubled reiving period. Ros Castle is an Iron Age settlement containing a couple of hut circles. It may have been used as a beacon in the medieval period.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
