This is a great ride taking in a loop to and from Colchester railway station.

I've tried to avoid taking people on to any really busy roads -- and largely succeeded.

The busiest sections are the Boxted Straight, which is limited to 40mph and where drivers are used to cyclists taking the lane (ie, riding in the middle of the traffic lane), and a 200m section of the A134 after Assington.

Stop-offs include Arger Fen nature reserve just before Assington, Boxford for its cafe, Kersey for it beauty and its pub, the town of Hadleigh for its Tudor buildings, and Dedham for its Constable connections.

At Lower Layham there is a short section of footpath (the entrance is on the left near the end of the lane, not at the bottom of the lane). Please walk this short stretch and you will be rewarded with the sight of the village watermill.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
