In Farncombe History Walk 1, we explored to the south and east of the village. We visited the Broadwater Estate and then looked to see how transport opportunities had contributed to local prosperity. In this second history walk, we will go west to investigate the rapid changes that impacted Farncombe in the 1800s and then we will take a more countryfied walk north, to Binscombe. Here we will uncover the history of even earlier times.
The walk is just over 3 miles but, compared to Farncombe History Walk 1, it is quite hilly. It is also more 'in the country' and some paths may be muddy after rain. Please leave 3 or 4 minutes at each stop to read the history and to look to see what you can see. The whole walk will probably occupy between two and two and a half hours but allow a little extra time to explore St John's Church if you did not visit at the end of history walk 1.

A note from the author about references
The material for this history walk has been drawn from many sources. Books and pamphlets, on-line sources, and primary sources kept at Godalming Museum and the Surrey History Centre in Woking have all been used and can provide further reading if you are inspired to find out more. The walk is intended to be a fun introduction to the history of Farncombe, not a 'learned work', and so I have not filled it with a host of references. If you are an author or owner of any of the pictures and feel that I have not properly credited your work, please let me know. I am also pleased to receive corrections or additional information.
"A History of Farncombe buildings" by Dr J N Bennett is a useful guide to many other Farncombe buildings not covered in this walk. It is available from Godalming Museum.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
