When I prepare my hiking routes with plotaroute, I rely heavily on the directions feature to add waypoints for water, shelter, supermarkets, campsites etc., using symbols to indicate the type of waypoint because this nicely shows up on the map and is also displayed by my Garmin watch.

With the recent FIT SDK 21.89 release, Garmin has finally added a list of additional course point types that makes this feature even more useful. I was very happy to discover that plotaroute already supports some of them (e.g. campsite, toilet, transport/train station). However there a few missing that I would love to see supported:

FIT course point (id)  <-> Plotaroute symbol
    store (48)  <-> shop
    rest_area (29) <-> picnic site
shelter (36)  <-> accommodation could work, but even better would be a new symbol, since shelters are more basic

I would also propose to map Plotaroute's "water source" to FIT's "water (3)" as it is already the case with "drinking water", since Garmin/FIT doesn't differentiate.

    Thank you!

PS: Is there an overview of the symbol to FIT course point mappings somewhere? I only found an old thread in the Garmin forum regarding the limited old mappings.

Thanks for that feedback Lasse. We did recently add some new Point Types for FIT files, but we'd need to investigate to see whether any of the ones you suggested can be added.

"We did recently add some new Point Types for FIT files". This is great. Is it documented somewhere which one you added?

It would be great if it could be visible when selecting symbols in some way, which ones are supported in fit.

    Hi Peter,

All the Plotaroute symbols are supported but most will be mapped to the Generic Point Type, as there isn't another suitable one. This is the current list we have for symbols that don't map as Genric:

    Plotaroute Symbol FIT PointType
    Mountain Summit
    Drinking Water Water
    Food Food
    Warning Danger
    First Aid FirstAid
    Runners Sprint
    Campsite Campsite
    Meeting Point MeetingSpot
    Toilets/Restroom Toilet
    Shower Shower
    Uphill SteepIncline
    Paths Cross Crossing
    Bus Stop, Train Station Transport
    Information Info

However, if there is a turn at that point in the route, the turn will be used to set the Point Type instead of any symbol selected:

    Plotaroute Turn Arrow FIT PointType
    Left Left
    Right Right
    Straight Straight
    Slight Left SlightLeft
    Sharp Left SharpLeft
    Slight Right SlightRight
    Sharp Right SharpRight
    U Turn UTurn

Thank you for the list of supported FIT course point types, this is very helpful.

I suggest to add the following mappings to expand the coverage even more:

    Plotaroute Symbol FIT PointType
    Picnic Site RestArea
    Water Source Water
    Shop Store
    Accommodation Shelter

Thanks Lasse. We've got to make changes to our download process for a separate bug fix, so we'll see if we can add those in at the same time.

    What do you say about:

Just in time Peter! Most of those look straightfoward. Not sure about one or two of them - T for tunnel for example, as people could be using that for other purposes, so displaying a tunnel symbol might not be appropriate. We'll add in as many as we can.
