There are lots of gps devices that do lots of things. Routing is the most complex thing that they do and there are numerous levels of complexity these devices have to come up with their solutions
I'm assuming you are here because you are interested in ROUTES to some degree.
Garmin is often the safest bet because they have more features. these are for cycling:
- MIO cyclo have some cheaper, well-featured devices with nice screen
- Cheapest options would be maybe from BRYTON and Lezyne
- Prettiest from Hammerhead (Karoo)
- TwoNav/OS support OS maps
For running, if you want an actual MAP on the watch then expensive Garmins are your only option unless you go for a Wear OS (Android) watch or an Apple Watch. Other watches can support quite impressive mapping but do so via a smartphone that you would have to carry if you plan on making changes to your route at any point.

1. One you can afford ? (Start simple ? )
2. Usage ? Walking ? Cycling ? MTB ? Cheap or expensive ? Navigation Guiding or just see your (on map) position ? Basic functionality or very (complex) sophisticated ? Training ? Occasional use only ? Dedicated hardware or by smartphone app ?
