Thanks, I'll go to plan B.
Sorry Michael, we don't have an option for that.
Is there a way to import a symbol of my own to use on a route? Maybe a star or diamond?
Thanks to both of you Mark and Plotaroute admin. That's exactly what I was looking for
Looking at the OSM editor, the symbols are are follows:
Thanks for find the symbols link Mark - that looks useful: OSM Symbols
I found this, which has a few good links ... https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/69469/where-can-i-find-a-table-of-map-symbols-and-their-meanings

Spring
This si one of the "Houses with "S" over it". Although this one is next to a railway, they also occur in the middle of nowhere, sometimes it is possible to find some sort of structure, sometimes they might be bus stops or also nothing. 42.526679,3.078444
Shelter (e.g. weather shelter)

That's all the information we have about map keys. We may be able to find out more from looking at the OpenStreetMap map editor. If you can let us know the map coordinates of the symbols we can investigate further. You can get the map coordinates by right-clicking on the route planner map.
Ok, I got the message with the "keys for maps". But these aren't what I was looking for. For instance there are blue dots that I have taken for a water source, a small hut with "S" above which might be shelter (someone else asked about this); watchtowers, I am assuming are something to do with a land border. I am sure there are others, I just can`t think of them right now....
