Popular Routes
Hi!
I'm new to plotaroute and this is my first post, so I'd like to start off by saying what a great tool this is,I'm finding it way better for my use case (planning multi day hikes) than all of the other services I've tried. Thank you!
There is only one issue I'm not so happy about: when I download a route as FIT file (to use on my GPS device), the names of the course points are truncated (seems to be to 14 chars max). Since I'm marking important POS such as water sources, this is often not enough to provide enough information for when I'm on the trail.
Is there a way to increase / rove the size limitation? As far as I can see from the FIT SDK docs, the FIT format itself doesn't mandate this limit.
This would be a very valuable feature to me and I imagine others who rely on waypoint information (which Garmin is making more prominent now with the "Up ahead" feature on the new Fenix 7).
I'd be happy to provide more information and test this feature.
Thank you,
Lasse
Hi Lasse,
Thanks for that kind feedback about the website - I'm glad you like it.
I think we set a 14 character limit on FIT file coursepoint names because we understood that some devices rejected files with longer names, but we'd need to look into it further. If this isn't the case we can certainly increase this limit, but we'd need to find out for sure somehow. What we would want to avoid though is adding yet another optional setting on the download form, as this is already quite complicated.
There is some further discussion in this old forum topic about this subject.

New to Plotaroute so there might be a simple solution that as yet escapes me but........
When exporting a gpx file the wpt names are truncated. While understandable when the export is destined for a gps device it is not necessary when my intent is to do some custom processing of the output to produce a custom routecard.
Is there an option somewhere to disable the truncation of wpt names on export?
By way of explanation, I already make a custom routecard in Google Sheets having converted a gpx file to csv format.
It would be cool if Plotaroute had a csv export option but I guess there must be a good reason why that is not already the case.
So, in the absence of a csv export option, I would be happy to export the gpx route file from Plotaroute and continue with my current workflow if it were not for the truncation of the wpt name in the gpx export. For so many reasons thr routecard is better read and understood when the wpt names are full length and meaningful rather than truncated.
I appreciate the need to keep the export UI as simple as possible but I don't think adding a tick box to enable/disable wpt name truncation would add very much to its complexity.
Unless of course I am missing something and the solution is in some setting elsewhere in Plotaroute?

Jim
Thanks for that feedback Jim. I'm afraid there isn't an option to disable truncation of waypoint names in GPX files - this is done to ensure compatability with GPS devices. I think what you really need is s CSV export option. We don't have this at the moment but I've added it to our Feature Requests list (number 134), where people can vote for it.
You are correct, of course - a CSV download option without a routepoint name-length restirction would be so useful.
Thanks for adding it to the list of Feature Requests.
